Hi there!
You are talking about a "String of Pearls" arch as shown in the image I uploaded, right?
Yes, you can use yarn instead of curly ribbons. I would go for a light weight type of yarn.
Not sure how it will look though, as the yarn will hang straight down. You can give it a try. Would love to see a photo of your arch.
